Victoria School 133th Speech Day

Yesterday was my school's 133th Speech Day. I, together with other sec 2 & 3 NCC (Land) cadets, participated in the Speech Day parade. This parade was to welcome the Guest-of-honour. As this year NCC (Land) was chosen to become the Guard-of -honour (G-O-H), we would be standing right in front of the foyer, with other UGs on the side.
We had trained very hard for this parade. During the holidays, we sacrificed our precious time just to practice our drills, to prepare us for the parade. Even when school reopened, we still had to practice almost everyday despite the H1N1 situation where we were not supposed to have CCAs. But I think that it was worth it as not only you can earn CCA points, but also do something for the school. Gladly, I was chosen to be in the G-O-H contingent. Other than having standard drills, we must also have standard appearances. We had to iron our uniform with starch and kiwi our boots until it is shiny, everything had to be in tip-top condition, otherwise we would leave a bad impression on the guest (especially the guest-of-honour), there would be a live feat, which means what we did would be shown in the hall, where all the guest would see us.
On Speech Day, we reported to school at around 11 a.m. We made our last minute preparations like kiwi-ing our boots. We then had our lunch (pizza ordered by teachers). Finally at around 3 p.m., our parade was going to start, I was rather nervous as everyone was going to see what I did. When the parade commander (our Sergeant Major) shouted the command (I can't really remember), we marched onto the spot. When we reached the spot, we would henta-kaki(marching on the spot) until the drum beat stopped. Shockingly, when we stopped, we bang was seemingly not coordinated! We screwed up our henta-kaki! How embarrassed we would be! But it was too late to do anything, we just continue the rest of the parade which turned out to be okay. Finally, the first guest-of-honour arrived, after five minutes of terrible waiting. We hormat him with our rifles and waited for the second guest of honour. After another five minutes of waiting, the second guest of honour arrived, we hormat him and he came to inspect us. The parade then ended with the marching-out.
After the parade, our sec 4 seniors told us that the parade was the worst of all rehearsals we had, as we screwed up our henta-kaki, with the reason being that we henta-kaki too fast (some just at right speed like I did). They told us just ignore what other think of us and not take it to heart, after all the effort used is commendable. Take it as a lesson learnt. After that the sec 4 told us that it was time for them to step down due to O levels, the sec 3 will take over, from 31 July onwards, they told us not to follow some of their footsteps and succeed in whatever they failed.
After we changed, we were confused whether we should stay in school as they said that all sec2s and 4s had to attend. Some said yes some said no. After a long arguement, we got to know from the teachers that we can go home, we had our dinner, packed our stuffs and ready to go.
Speech Day this year was a rather boring day for me as we could not get in the hall and watch the performance. Besides that my mood was affected as we screwed up the parade. Hope that I would be participating in the Speech Day next year and screwing up like this year!

My NCC badges and rank...(updated)

After a patient long wait of 6-7 months, on 10 July 2009, which was yesterday, we finally received our Lance Corporal rank, together with 2 other badges (Napfa badge (bronze) and Total Defence badge (bronze))!
While we were having our Speech Day Full
Dress Rehearsal, our teacher-in-charge suddenly called us up to the amphitheatre. There, I saw our ranks and badges lying on the steps, I thought: Yes! We finally can get our rank and badges, no need to be looked down by other schools or our classmates from NPCC as a Private! Soon our teacher-in-charge told us sign on a paper to verify and then fall in. He then started distributing our ranks one by one. After everyone had gotten their ranks (too bad for those who did not turn up, they are still Privates), our teacher-in-charge then told us to collect our badges one by one. After gotten all our stuffs, our teacher told us to get our ranks sewed by Monday. Then we realised that we did not get our 1-star kayaking badge. They told us that it was out of stock. For me I went to the army shop near my house to get my rank sewed as sewing myself is freakingly difficult and might turn out ugly. That day was a good day for me as I was no longer a Private! But still I am looking forward to more achievements in NCC!
